Thirukkural on food, restraint and hospitality

Sixty couplets from Thiruvalluvar, arranged by theme

The Thirukkural is a two-thousand-year-old Tamil work — 1,330 couplets in 133 chapters, by Thiruvalluvar. It gives a whole chapter to eating, another to feeding guests, and scatters many more across restraint, giving, farming and rain. Gathered here are the sixty that bear on food, with the Tamil, a transliteration, the meaning, and the reference for every one.

The view underneath: the Kural treats food as neither something to be scorned nor something to be indulged. It asks for balance, gratitude and restraint — food sustains a life lived well, and is not itself the point. So Valluvar forbids no dish. He speaks about measure, timing and intent.

Measure and digestion

The heart of the matter. The chapter is called Marundhu — Medicine — and Valluvar begins his medicine with digestion: the first treatment is to eat only once the last meal has gone.

941 Excess or lack, and disease follows

Mikinum Kuraiyinum Noiseyyum Noolor · Valimudhalaa Enniya Moondru

If (food and work are either) excessive or deficient, the three things enumerated by (medical) writers, flatulence, biliousness, and phlegm, will cause (one) disease

This is the tridosha of Ayurveda, in Tamil, from roughly the same centuries. Disease is not an invader but a balance lost — and the balance is kept or broken at the plate.

942 Eat once the last meal has gone

Marundhena Ventaavaam Yaakkaikku Arundhiyadhu · Atradhu Potri Unin

No medicine is necessary for him who eats after assuring (himself) that what he has (already) eaten has been digested

The Kural's most practical health rule. Note what it does not say: no food is forbidden, no ritual prescribed. Only timing.

Kural 942 · Chapter 95 மருந்து (Marundhu — Medicine) · பொருட்பால்

943 Eat knowing the measure

Atraal Alavarindhu Unka Aqdhutampu · Petraan Netidhuykkum Aaru

If (one's food has been) digested let one eat with moderation; (for) that is the way to prolong the life of an embodied soul

Alavu — measure — is the key word of this whole section. Valluvar never says what the measure is; it belongs to each body, and learning it is the practice.

Kural 943 · Chapter 95 மருந்து (Marundhu — Medicine) · பொருட்பால்

944 When truly hungry, what agrees with you

Atradhu Arindhu Kataippitiththu Maaralla · Thuykka Thuvarap Pasiththu

(First) assure yourself that your food has been digested and never fail to eat, when very hungry, whatever is not disagreeable (to you)

Three conditions at once: the last meal digested, real hunger present, and the food one that agrees with you. Break any of them and the meal stops being medicine.

Kural 944 · Chapter 95 மருந்து (Marundhu — Medicine) · பொருட்பால்

945 Agreeable food, restrained amount

Maarupaatu Illaadha Unti Maruththunnin · Oorupaatu Illai Uyirkku

There will be no disaster to one's life if one eats with moderation, food that is not disagreeable

Kural 945 · Chapter 95 மருந்து (Marundhu — Medicine) · பொருட்பால்

946 Pleasure with the moderate, disease with the glutton

Izhivarindhu Unpaankan Inpampol Nirkum · Kazhiper Iraiyaankan Noi

As pleasure dwells with him who eats moderately, so disease (dwells) with the glutton who eats voraciously

Both scales in one sentence. Valluvar neither renounces food nor praises it; he only says what comes to stay with whom.

Kural 946 · Chapter 95 மருந்து (Marundhu — Medicine) · பொருட்பால்

947 Eating past your fire

Theeyala Vandrith Theriyaan Peridhunnin · Noyala Vindrip Patum

He will be afflicted with numberless diseases, who eats immoderately, ignorant (of the rules of health)

Theeyalavu — the measure of your fire. This is the jatharagni of Ayurveda. How much to eat is set by your digestion, not by what is on the plate.

Kural 947 · Chapter 95 மருந்து (Marundhu — Medicine) · பொருட்பால்

Restraint and self-mastery

Valluvar does not treat appetite as an enemy. He treats mastery of the senses as the measure of a person, and the tongue is one of those senses.

121 Restraint lifts, its absence sinks

Atakkam Amararul Uykkum Atangaamai · Aarirul Uyththu Vitum

Self-control will place (a man) among the Gods; the want of it will drive (him) into the thickest darkness (of hell)

Kural 121 · Chapter 13 அடக்கம் உடைமை (Atakkamutaimai — The Possession of Self-restraint) · அறத்துப்பால்

122 Guard restraint as treasure

Kaakka Porulaa Atakkaththai Aakkam · Adhaninooung Killai Uyirkku

Let self-control be guarded as a treasure; there is no greater source of good for man than that

Kural 122 · Chapter 13 அடக்கம் உடைமை (Atakkamutaimai — The Possession of Self-restraint) · அறத்துப்பால்

123 Restraint is itself knowledge

Serivarindhu Seermai Payakkum Arivarindhu · Aatrin Atangap Perin

Knowing that self-control is knowledge, if a man should control himself, in the prescribed course, such self-control will bring him distinction among the wise

Here Valluvar separates restraint from renunciation. Restraint is not a punishment but an understanding — knowing what is enough.

126 Draw in the five, as a tortoise does

Orumaiyul Aamaipol Aindhatakkal Aatrin · Ezhumaiyum Emaap Putaiththu

Should one throughout a single birth, like a tortoise keep in his five senses, the fruit of it will prove a safe-guard to him throughout the seven-fold births

Taste is one of the five. The tortoise does not cut its limbs off; it draws them in, and puts them out again when the time is right. That is the Kural's restraint.

Hospitality

The whole of Chapter 9. In the Kural the purpose of a household is to feed the guest: food here is not a private pleasure but a public duty.

Irundhompi Ilvaazhva Thellaam Virundhompi · Velaanmai Seydhar Poruttu

The whole design of living in the domestic state and laying up (property) is (to be able) to exercise the benevolence of hospitality

The foundation of the chapter, and a startling one: for Valluvar the entire point of a household is the guest. Food is gathered so that it can be given.

Sharing food

Feeding the hungry is the highest giving in the Kural — and eating alone is its opposite.

221 Giving to the destitute is the only giving

The power of those who perform penance is the power of enduring hunger It is inferior to the power of those who remove the hunger (of others)

Valluvar puts fasting in its place. To bear your own hunger is a power; to end someone else's is the greater one.

Refusing flesh

The chapter argues from non-killing, not from purity or caste: how can kindness survive in someone who grows his own flesh on another's.

Tamil text and transliteration: tk120404/thirukkural (Apache-2.0). English: the Drew-Lazarus prose gloss of 1885, public domain. The Hindi renderings and the notes are Bhojanveda's own, not taken from any published translation. The source's modern Tamil commentaries are still in copyright and are not reproduced.

Corrected readings
90: நோக்கக் குழையும் -- the source reads குநழ்யும், against its own transliteration and commentary
943: அளவறிந்து -- the source reads அறவறிந்து, against its own commentary, which glosses அளவு (measure)
89 (English): exercises -- the source reads excercises
229 (English): completed to ‘...much more painful than begging’ -- the source stops at ‘much more’, and the Tamil reads இரத்தலின் இன்னாது (worse than begging)
926 (English): resemble the dead -- the source reads ‘the deed’, which reverses the line
